Abstract

This study examined broadcast stations usage of digital technology for the dissemination of information concerning Nigerian democracy with a special focus on electronic voting and transmission of election results. It adopted survey and structured interview methods. Questionnaire and interview guide were employed for data collection. This study was anchored on Agenda-setting and Technological Determinism Media theories. Simple random and quota sampling techniques were used to select the sample size of 54 and 27 respondents using quota sampling method for the selection from each selected broadcasting stations – Channels Televisions and Continental Television (TVC) – respectively. Data gathered through survey method were coded using Statistical Products and Service Solution (SPSS) version 21 software. Data were presented in tables, frequencies and percentages using descriptive statistics. Responses gathered from the structured interviews were transcribed and qualitative analysis carried out in line with the research question. The study found out that the broadcast media activities concerning building a viable democracy in Nigeria is credible. It revealed that the usage of digital technology has a significant impact on the performance of the broadcast media. It indicated that different forms of digital technology acquired for better performance of the broadcast media political functions such as internet, weblog, Android phones, digital cameras and others. This study identified challenges confronted by the selected broadcast media in the course of discharging their responsibilities. It concluded that the broadcast media stations should be encourage to do more in fanning the amber of democracy in Nigeria. In addition, government should support them in the area of funding in order to successfully achieve the implementation of e-voting and transmission of election results in Nigeria. This study recommended that government should support the full implementation of e-voting and transmission of election results. Moreover, broadcast media should be funded via loan facilities. Finally, broadcast media should step up actions in their bid to build virile democracy in Nigeria.
