Abstract

This essay critically examined the interplay of political system and media system in the consolidation of democratic governance in Nigeria. The relationship is juxtaposed with the three models of media and politics - Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist and Liberal – propounded by Hallin and Mancini in 2004. Drawing parallels from the Nigerian media system, the article uses the Hallin and Mancini model to examine the significant role the media play and ought to play in strengthening democratic ideals and good governance with the ultimate goal of attaining sustainable development.
